Owen Industries Welder Apprentice Program

Apprentice Interview: Aaron Gunn

Carter Lake, Iowa-based Owen Industries (an AISC member) is now an official registered apprenticeship sponsor and offers a three-year, competency-based welder apprenticeship program. In August the company began an interview and selection process, seeking four welder apprentices to offer on-the-job training as well as worksite classroom training, in partnership with Iowa Western Community College, at no cost to the apprentice.

Aaron Gunn started as one of four apprentices in the program in September 2016.

Aaron worked several jobs prior to the welding apprentice program; flooring, customer service, National Guard, security….jack of many trades. Aaron had a friend who encouraged him to apply and when he moved from Florida to the Midwest, he found the program listed on-line.

Aaron has worked in many different areas of the Structures building, he recently started welding in the bridge bay. This has become one of his favorite projects.

Aaron has learned many things in his 6 months with the program, he enjoys learning all the diverse happenings in the operation. He states asking questions is the best way to acquire important needed information.

Aaron has really enjoyed the people he works with here at Owen Industries/PVS Structures. His co-workers in the Bridge Bay have been helpful and have taught him many valuable lessons. The apprentices have classroom time on Tuesdays from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The instructor from Iowa Western comes to the training area. The program is 3 years long, and at the end each apprentice will be a certified journeyman. Nick Bristol, the PVS Structures Plant Manager has been a favorite mentor for Aaron.

Senator Ernst tours PVS

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst toured Owen Industries on Thursday, April 20th.  Senator Ernst visited both the PVS Metals Service Center and PVS Structures Division. She met with a group of staff in the Bridge Bay, asking questions and learning more about the company. The tour was facilitated by The National Railroad Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC).

Owen Industries utilizes a fleet of hydraulic press brakes and other forming equipment

From simple 90-degree bends to complex sequences with 10 or more bends, our press brakes can form small and large parts up to 750 tons and 18-feet long. Our versatility, together with our advanced technology, skilled workforce and controlled processes, allows us to meet a broad selection of customer needs and consistently produce a high-quality product.

From simple brackets and signboards to complex metal housings, we specialize in offering press brake forming services for a variety of sheet metal fabrications. We can bend everything from structural components to highly cosmetic panels using our hydraulic and mechanical press brakes.

Our collection of over 20 press brakes and other forming equipment allows us to perform offline programming, automatically calculate bend sequence, and set up plans customized to workshop requirements.

A standard range of V-shaped, plus channel-shaped dies and punches are used for producing parts with distinct shapes. We also use custom-fabricated dies to produce unique precision-formed parts. With both standard and custom tooling capabilities, we can form parts into round, square, rectangle or other complex shapes.

After each job is complete, we analyze our processes to insure maximum efficiency in our manufacturing methods. Our CNC programs can be easily modified as revisions become necessary, and all data is backed up and securely stored daily. Whether we are supporting the development of a unique prototype, small runs or large runs, we have the experience to suit almost every need. Redbud Heavy Gauge Stretcher Leveler

Our Red Bud machine which is the finest heavy gauge stretcher leveler in the industry.  It stretches material beyond its yield point to remove stresses introduced at the mill, including coil set, crossbow, edge wave and center-buckle, so your lasers and other processing equipment can operate “lights out” with fewer interruptions. The machine also uses non-marking, non-slip grippers to ensure that the material remains clean and free of marks during stretcher operation.

Our Red Bud Industries® heavy gauge stretcher leveler, housed in our 200,000 sq.-ft. PVS Metals facility, produces panel-flat material, which customers can custom order to minimize scrap and in-house processing costs. Material from the stretcher leveler arrives at your door flat, and stays flat during processing.

The new line is rated for: 1.00″ (25.4 mm) material at 77″ (1956 mm) wide and has an 80,000 lbs. (36,287 kg) coil capacity.

Maximum stack length is:576″ (14,630 mm) with provisions to run up to 720″ (18,288 mm).

The line has a maximum speed of 200 FPM (61 MPM).
