PVS Structures

Steel erection has begun on The Luminarium. The premise of the new building is to tie together the riverfront revitalization of Omaha to the downtown area expanding the area being developed just to the south of the Bob Kerry pedestrian bridge.  This new addition to Omaha is designed to be a hands on place for exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) building blocks of the future with exhibits that are designed to change with future developments in those areas.

The Luminarium is being showcased as an anchor point to the newly developing area with green spaces to bring the whole family.

PVS Structures is excited to be a part of this amazing project.

Owen Industries/PVS Structures is excited to be a part of the new Omaha Performing Arts Campus Expansion. Construction has begun in downtown Omaha next to the Capitol District between 11th and 12th on Dodge street.  Erection for the steel portion of the project begins delivery in August 2021 and is expected to complete the main core and shell by November 2021.  The detailing of steel will last into 2022.  Completion is expected mid-2023.

The new building will be a performance theater with four steel trusses over 100’ long.  The catwalks that will attach to these will be used by stagehands, technicians and those that will help with lighting, props and sound.

This project has 1018 tons of steel.

Theater will include seating with balconies, VIP lounge, outside patio areas on two levels, and a canted swooping roofline to add the art type feeling. The venue is capable of accommodating audiences of up to 3,000 people.

Stay tuned for more updates on this project!

Let us tell you a story about a recent college graduate that applied for the job that did not exist.  He is unassuming, yet resolute.  He graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln with a degree in Civil Engineering.  After unsuccessfully seeking employment with an impressive local list of recognizable organizations, he kept researching.  Through research, he found a locally owned family organization.  He skipped past Human Resources and directly contacted upper management.  His past experiences taught him that HR may delay his progress.  His resume’; uninspiring.  He just graduated from college.  He had very little work experience.  Upper management liked the applicant’s initiative, and agreed to meet him.  Management would help connect him to the Engineering world.  Management did not have any open positions that fit the young graduate.  They met and talked.  Management was pleased enough that the young graduate filled out an application to have on file…for a job that did not exist.

Over the next few weeks, management discussed the applicant with Human Resources and told HR that we didn’t have anything open for him.  HR and management agreed that the applicant had initiative.  HR suggested developing an internship for the applicant.  They all agreed to a 6-month internship.  The applicant would work for the Quality Department as a documentation specialist, learning a craft, learning the organization, and developing his resume’.  That was 6 months ago.

Meet Andrew Edwards.  We offered Andrew a full time position with PVS Structures today.  He accepted!  We could not be any more proud of him.  We all won!

Welcome Andrew Edwards to the PVS family!  We can all learn from Andrew’s initiative and resolve.

PVS Structures is fabricating eight 75-0 beam spans for Iowa Interstate Railroad that are being installed over the Raccoon River just West of Des Moines, IA. These beam spans are using 5-W40x503 beams per span. Each of these beams is 42 inches deep and weighs 503 lbs. per lineal foot or 37,800 lbs. Each span has two units, a 2 beam unit and a 3 beam unit. Fully fabricated, the 2 beam unit weighs 97,000 lbs and 3 beam unit weighs 141,000 lbs. the entire span once erected in the field weighs 243,780 lbs or 121.9 tons.

Hayden Transportation LLC out of Liberty, MO has been contracted to move these units from PVS to the Jobsite in Booneville, IA. The tractor trailer they’re using to move each unit has a total of 11 axles, Seven at the tractor and 4 at the trailer. Once loaded the tractor trailer is approximately 125’-0” long. The trailer being used has a steerable rear end which is needed to make any sharp corner. It is operated independently from the tractor by remote control from the following pilot car.

Hayden Transportation has shared a video showing one of the eight 3 beam units leaving our facility in Carter Lake and traveling through downtown Omaha to Interstate 80 and finally to the jobsite. Please see video below.

Thanks again to operations manager Doug Loughery with Hayden Transportation for composing the video and sharing, It’s an amazing sight to see.

PVS Structures is excited to share that our work is featured on the March 2020 cover of AISC’s Modern Steel Construction magazine.  The cover image shows a collaboration stair designed to encourage teamwork between the levels at HDR.  The design, fabrication, and installation of the structural steel, including these stairs, was a result of the teamwork between HDR, Kiewit, TD2, Davis Erection, H&R and PVS.  In all, PVS delivered 1700 tons of steel to build this 10-story building, the anchor of Aksarben Village that includes other PVS projects, including:  Pacific Life and Right at Home.
