PVS Structures

Last year, PVS was recognized for outstanding work on projects by Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental global business unit at the Bechtel Subcontractor and Supplier Recognition awards. The awards recognize subcontractors and suppliers who supported Bechtel‘s work in nuclear power, environmental clean-up, defense, and nuclear security and operations projects during 2014.

“Our vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers are integral team members on our projects and they do amazing, innovative work in extremely difficult places,” said Craig Albert, president of the Nuclear, Security & Environmental business unit. “These award recipients not only met our high standards for quality and performance and but also went above and beyond for mission delivery.”

“PVS has been honored to be a part of the WTP team over the last decade, and is excited to have been recognized for such an incredible honor. PVS continues to view our customers as partners in an effort to successfully execute all of our projects, be it a 20,000 ton nuclear project or a 300 ton local office building,” said Tyler Owen, General Manager of the Structures Division.

Paxton & Vierling Steel is a steel fabricator with a variety of projects under contract. Current and recently executed projects include the four new nuclear plants under construction in Georgia and South Carolina, a Canadian refinery project, the CU stadium expansion in Boulder, CO, and in Omaha both the UNMC parking garage in Midtown and the Pac Life Headquarters in Ak-Sar-Ben village.

Companies were evaluated on multiple factors. They include: overall performance; the ability to deliver quality services/supplies on time; the ability to work collaboratively to meet milestones; and meeting or exceeding project expectations in aspects of safety, construction performance, technical expertise, and environmental compliance. Nominations were reviewed and approved by Bechtel procurement and project managers.   Final recommendations were approved by senior leadership.

Last week, we had the fantastic pleasure of having Iowa’s United States Representative David Young come to our shop and take a tour.  He was able to see both our Structures Division and our Metal Service Center across the street.  It was wonderful meeting him and to get to listen to what he had to say.

The event itself had a bit of news coverage, check out the articles below as well as some pictures that were taken!

Thank you to the Congressman and everyone else who came out!

Last week, Paxton & Vierling Steel Co. was the venue of choice for Opera Omaha’s 2016 gala.  With a few cosmetic tweaks, professional lighting, tables, chairs, and a whole bunch of talent, our North Bay was transformed into a thing of beauty.  The industrial look was perfect for “Semele” an opera by George Frederic Handel.

A special thanks to the PVS employees who helped get everything ready, Opera Omaha for selecting us as the venue, and of course everyone else who made the night so special!

Truss Bustin’ is an annual event sponsored by the Nebraska Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the UNO Student Chapter that challenges Omaha-area high school students to design and construct a balsa wood bridge, simulating the engineering design process from concept through construction. Students designed their own truss following standard specifications, draw construction plans, and put their designs to the test at the competition where the trusses were loaded to failure. The competition introduces students to engineering professions, and provides teachers a hands-on approach to teaching their students about structural mechanics and the design process.

This year’s competition was Saturday, February 27th, 2016 in the atrium of the Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) on the University of Nebraska – Omaha campus. The competition came at the conclusion of Engineer’s Week, an annual celebration of engineers making a difference in our communities and around the world. Trusses were scored based on their strength, weight, and aesthetics, and prizes are awarded to the top 3 finishers. The top trusses received $300, $200, and $100 awards, respectively, and winners will be recognized at their school, and at a Nebraska Section ASCE meeting with their parents and teacher.

PVS had the pleasure of fabricating the testing frame and had a blast watching the students test their trusses.  Check out the pictures below!!

Todd and Tyler of The Todd-N-Tyler Radio Empire recently broadcast live from PVS Metals in Carter Lake. While in-house, the two gave welding a try.

We are proud to announce a subtle but significant change to our logo and naming convention.  Founded as Paxton & Vierling Iron Works in 1885, and focused primarily on our foundry and structural products, the company eventually rebranded as Paxton & Vierling Steel in 1954, and our logo has worn the badge of PVS ever since.  While the company specialized in fabricating steel structures for most of its existence, it branched into Service Center Warehouse sales in the 1960s, and eventually moved into more advanced steel processing in the late 1990s.  Service Center sales eventually grew to be as significant as structural sales, and we ultimately formed two separate divisions in the 1990s.  With the opening of our new Metals Center, and given some historical challenges operating two unique divisions under one name, we thought the timing was right to make this critical change.

From today Paxton & Vierling Steel Co’s Structural Fabrication Division will now be referred to as PVS Structures, while the Service Center and Plate Processing Division will be referred to as PVS Metals.  (The Structures group will continue to rely on the full Paxton & Vierling moniker as necessary, but the Metals group will be known only as PVS.)

PVS Metals will also now own a new address (500 Avenue H, Carter Lake, IA 51510) and 185,000 square feet of the most advanced warehousing, service center and plate processing facilities in the world.  PVS Structures (still at 501 Avenue H) will gain an additional 100,000 SF of fabricating elbow room in which to build more bridges, structures and weldments.
