MVS SHOWING ITS GREEN

This past Saturday marked the 10th annual Sioux City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade! The weather cooperated, and the turnout was amazing, with over 6,000 people lining the 10-block route in downtown Sioux City. This was the first year for MVS Metals participation, and the results were nothing short of spectacular!

Employees at MVS donated their time and money assembling, painting, and stocking the float, with a little help from the Ward Jet Water Jet machine outlining the clover leafs and the pots of gold. Over 1,000 sets of beads were tossed out to the cheering spectators, along with hundreds of chocolate coins wrapped in gold. Smiles were abundant, and the atmosphere was electric.

MVS Metals would like to thank the Parade Organizers for doing such a great job putting everything together and look forward to celebrating with everyone again in the future! Best of luck to everyone in the 2018 year ahead!

Hollow Structural Sections (HSS), Tube Steel, Structural Tubing and Steel Pipe, just to name a few, are all commonly used terms in the Steel Industry. While it may have many names, and a million times as many uses, there is one thing for certain: We would be lost without it. We would not have car frames to take us to work, no metal scaffolding to aid in the construction of the buildings we work in, and certainly no airplanes to take us on vacation! Square, Round and Rectangular Steel Tubing have supported our great society for over 150 years, and with the right touch of human innovation, will continue to do so for centuries to come!

One of the major challenges of Engineering and Design starts with the question, how? How do we make this work? How do we incorporate our design into a physical product? The answer to a lot of these questions is Manufacturing Technology. This immense arena of technical wizardry and know-how help to bring these ideas into reality, and make the success of our future possible. Owen Industries has been at the forefront of the Steel Manufacturing & Technology Industry for over 130 years, and in that time, has done just that and so much more.

“With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility” and when precisely manufacturing 3-Dimensional Hollow Structural Sections, both power and responsibility are the keys to the machine. Owen Industries owns and operates one of the largest 3D Structural Laser Systems in the Country, capable of processing angle, channel, square, round, rectangular and wide flange shapes up to 48′ – 0″ long and 50# per lineal foot on certain sizes. Limited only to the imagination, this 3D Laser System uses touch sensing technology to cut, bevel and even tap its on holes with accuracies comparable to flat laser systems. If you have a design that needs complex and accurate support, or even straight and simple shapes, please inquire with us at www.owenind.com and get your ideas off the ground today!

Gears: A Stable of Manufacturing

Lapping Carrier Gears have long been a staple in the building blocks of human civilization. Our early ancestors used wind and water power with a combination of gears to grind grains, seeds, nuts and beans into flour. They used gears to pump water and bellow fire, to track time and to navigate the high seas. There is no doubt that without the invention of the gear, we would not be where we are today.

The advancement of Science and Technology often creates the fuel for its own expansion, with each new frontier requiring intricate and precise parts even more innovative than the last. Lasers require a variety of polished mirrors to redirect, steer or fold beams of photons in simple machines like light curtains, to detecting gravitational waves through space-time with LIGO. Telescopes require highly reflective surfaces to gather and refocus light in order to peer at cosmic targets over 13 billion light years away. While these technologies are without a doubt impressive, they would be nothing without the use of Lapping Carriers.

The Importance of Lapping Carriers

Lapping Carriers are used in a manufacturing process aptly called Lapping, where two surfaces are rubbed together with an abrasive between them when grinding and polishing materials is required. The gear teeth on the Lapping Carrier allow it to be rotated at varying velocities, combined with a library of abrasives, in order to achieve the required finish. Given these conditions, it is paramount that each carrier is produced to a very high and consistent quality. MVS Metals recently had the opportunity of Water Jet cutting some 1/2″ and 3/4” PVC Lapping Carriers for use in the polishing and grinding industry.
