HOT OFF THE PRESSES

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, the history of Owen Industries and its founding firm, Paxton & Vierling

We are excited to announce the release of the official history book of OII and P&V.  This book has been decades in the making, beginning with a rough draft commissioned by Ed Owen in the 80s, and ending with its publication by our friends at Legacy Preservation this summer.    The tome is as much a history of the Midwest and the steel processing and fabrication industries as it is a retelling of Paxton & Vierling’s last 133 years.  The book details how the 19th, 20th and now 21st century and its economies, wars, floods, commodity fluctuations, and depressions impacted the evolution of the corporation, and how the thousands of current and former employees succeeded in a variety of conditions.

Please contact Susan Sherman at SSherman@owenind.com if you are interested in acquiring a copy for yourself – we are offering discounted pricing for friends, family and retirees ($5 for paperback, $20 for hardbound).

Bob White started with Owen Industries February 9, 1976. He started in Accounting doing invoices and moved to payroll in 1988. Bob has had multiple positions in Accounting including Fab costing. He then transferred to the IT department in 1992, which he will be retiring from May 31st after 42 years!

Owen Industries: What did you value most about you experience working at PVS during your many years of tenure?

Bob White: The people I work with and the friendships I have found.

OII: What do you consider to be the most significant change that helped the company grow?

BW: Going from manual everything to computer automation.

OII: Do you recall a past project that challenged the team? One of those “They said it can’t be done” projects?

BW: Working with the IT team, they have always found a way to do whatever comes across their desk. They have incredible teamwork and always get the job done.

When I started, there were programmers in IT, and they had to write the systems.

OII: What do you think the future has in store for PVS and for Owen Industries?

BW: Only great things.

OII: What’s different from the way things were done your first day on the job from the way they are done now?

BW: When I started, everything was manual. The payroll was backed up on a larger computer that printed on tape. Now everything is computerized and much more efficient.

Bob plans to spend time with his wife, who will also be retiring the end of May. He has 4 grandchildren, one of which he plans to watch during the day. He has some upcoming travel plans and hopes for find some new hobbies. One of his plans could be a new part-time job! Bob says he has really enjoyed working here, this has been his only full-time job after college!

PVS around the world. On my recent trip to Scotland I visited the Ancient and Royal St Andrews Golf Club. It seemed appropriate to represent PVS in this location that is filled with tradition and pride.  Two places an ocean and thousands of miles apart that have been “at the top of their game” for a long time.
